The town of Ayamonte sits 2 kilometres from the new suspension bridge in to Portugal on the Rio Guadiana. For many year Portugal was reached by the ferry but the new bridge makes the crossing fast and easy. With no border control you can literally be in Spain one minute and in Portugal 2 minutes later. The Ferry still runs from the Port in Ayamonte to Portugal if you dont fancy the journey by car.
Ayamonte's close proximity to Portugal makes it a popular place for both Portugese locals and visitors to the Algarve on day trips. Its quaint old cobbled streets and flower filled squares with their tiled fountains draw the crowds as do the weekly open air markets. Many visit Ayamonte to sample the fish all locally caught and offered on the restaurant menus. All kinds of seafood are available and particularly popular is tuna which comes in several differnt cuts including fillet and loin. Petrol is certainly cheaper in Spain than Portugal and many locals cross the bridge just to fill up and have a quick coffee in one of the local bars before they head back.
Ayamonte is surronded by areas of wetland called Las Marismas del Guadiana which are home to many species of small animals, amphibians, storks, flamingos and herons making it a wildlife lovers paradise.
The nearest beach to Ayamonte is around 5 minutes drive and heading further along the coast you can visit the beaches of Isla Christina, Islantilla and the quaint old fishing village of El Romido.
