Alcala de los Gazules lies within the Alcornocales Natural Park. The Alcornocales (The Cork Oak Grove) is a vast park of some 167,767 hectares. From Tarifa in the South to the Sierrra de Grazalema Natural Park in the North. It is not only a haven for wildlife including storks, kites, buzzards, Spanish Impetial Eagles, vulchers, Eurasian Wolves, Egyptian Mongoos, wildcats, polecats, weasels, fallow deer, roe deer and Iberian Lynx but it is most famous for its cork trees. The numerous trees and quiet lush countyside provide a wonderful environment for the wildlife. The cork from the trees is still harvested and most goes to the wine bottling industry. The park is a fantastic area for nature lovers, walkers and those who enjoy fresh air and magnificent scenery.
The pueblo of Alcala de los Gazules is an interesting combination of elegant plazas, corkscrew streets and whitewashed buildings. Some of the castles still remain from the Arabic period and many religious buildings constructed at the time of the reconquest by the Christians are still in evidence.
Also of interest is the Fuente de la Salada. It is one of the many examples of Roman ingenuity and engineering still visible in Spain.
Alcala is ideal for those who like a small intimate town with open countryside within walking distance.
