SANLUCAR DE BARRAMEDA

Sanlucar sits on the coast to the south of the Doñana Natural Park and to the north of Chipiona.  Its beaches are well known throughout the region and are popular especially with Spanish tourists in the summer months of July and August.
Sanlucar is joined to the Natural Park by a ferry which crosses the narrow straight between the town and park at regular intervals carrying day trippers over to use the beaches of the Park.  Access to the actual park has to be via Huelva but you can certainly enjoy the crossing and a few hours on the beautiful white sand beach at the entrance to the estuary.

The old town of Sanlucar is well worth seeing and offers some spectacular buildings and lovely palm filled squares.  The town has an affluent past due to the sherry trade when it was used to load up the boats which travelled up the Guadalquivir River to the port in Seville.  Sadly due to silting the river is no longer navegable to shipping but the town still boasts many Bodegas (sherry houses).  One of the most famous wines from this area is Barbadillo.  Large quantities of this product are sold throughout Spain and the vines which produce the wine grow along the road just outside of Sanlucar.

Not only can the town offer excellent beaches and good wines and sherries it also has a very popular  golf course and is famed for its horse races on the beach in August.   Many world class riders come to take part in the races and the prizes are financially well worth the effort.
