Lesley McEwan at Cadizcasa Ethical Estate Agents is using her very popular website www.cadizcasa.com to promote valuable information from The British Embassy and get it spread as widely as possible in the Costa de la Luz area. Lesley says ” The British Embassy are encouraging anyone who bought an illegal house to file a report with the Oficina Municipal de Informacion al Consumidor and register their case. This will enable the Spanish government to see where illegal properties have been sold. It will give them the opportunity to look at the “selling chain”
and where offences have been committed, As we all know there were some disreputable individuals who were somewhat sparing with the truth which has lead people to buy properties without electricity or water and with complicated paperwork issues. Now there is an opportunity to register your case which will add weight to the fight to get properties legalised. We need as many people as possible to register and if you bought while living in the UK or through an agent working in the UK you can also complain to Which or Consumer Direct. Both are powerful bodies who do a lot of good work so I would recommend that anyone in this situation does not delay in making a complaint. Many people are working hard to help those who have fallen prey to this bad practice, local organisations and help groups and some excellent lawyers but we need the consumer to do their part too.”. If your property is the subject of an ongoing legal case in Spain then I would recommend that you speak to your solicitor before you make a report.
A list of the offices where you can complain is shown below. If you purchased while living in the UK or through a company in the UK then you can also make a complaint to Which (the UK consumers association) http://www.which.co.uk/ or to Consumer Direct http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/.
The details you will need to complain are
- Personal details: name, surname, address, telephone number, email as well as some other information
- Details of the company you are complaining about: name, activity, address and telephone number
- Relevant documentation: receipts, bills, quotes, contracts and publicity/adverts if relevant
