El Puerto de Santa Maria has had a colourful and eventful past and notably Columbus started his second voyage to the Americas from here. There are many ancient buildings including fortifications, churches, convents and palacettes or small palaces. The town has a thriving tourist industry and is a centre for the production of wine and brandy, Osborne being the most famous with its trade mark black bull. It is also renowned for the fish and sea food restaurants that abound, all of which are within easy walking distance. The capital of the province is just 10 kilometres across the bay of Cadiz and the journey can be made by regular ferry service for just a few euors return. The towns of Jerez and Seville can be reached by car of train from the main line station that serves the town.
