House location

Until very recently, Alcalá de los Gazules has not been as well known as the other pueblo’s blancos of this region - Vejer de la Frontera, Arcos de la Frontera and Medina Sidonia. However, all that is changing, as the new motorway between Jerez and Algeciras makes visiting Alcalá much easier than in the past. Both tourists and house purchasers are now finding the town and its situation very much to their taste.
Alcalá finds itself right in the very heart of Cadiz province, and is known as the gateway to the Los Alcornocales natural park. This park is sometimes called the Iberian Jungle - it is 172,000 hectares of totally unspoilt natural vegetation, and is a mecca for all those wanting to pursue outdoor activities such as trekking, canoeing, mountain biking, climbing, horse riding and so on.
The town itself also has much to recommend it. There are many historic sites here and in the countryside nearby. There has been a settlement at Alcalá since prehistoric times, with Roman, Visigoth and Moorish rulers coming and going throughout history.
Alcalá makes a great place either to base a holiday or to purchase a house. As well as the town and the nearby countryside, being in the centre of Cadiz province means that links to other places are quick and easy.
The airports of both Jerez and Gibraltar are only a 35  minute drive away, while Malaga airport can be reached in less than 2 hours. Estepona and the Mediterranean coast are under an hour's drive away, while the Atlantic beaches can be reached in 30 minutes. Jerez is also 30 minutes away, while Cadiz can be reached in under an hour and Seville in one and a half hours.
Alcalá still retains a very Spanish feel to it, from the steep and narrow winding roads in the old town, to the cork oak harvests that occur in the natural parks and the local fiestas and celebrations that happen periodically throughout the year. Visitors in search of real Spanish culture and countryside will not be disappointed.
