Standing on a hilltop is the ancient town of Medina Sidonia one of the areas many 'pueblos blancos' and dates back to the 15th century. Its most famous family would be the Dukes of Medina Sidonia who lead the Spanish Armada, although they apparently were not too keen on water. The ancient city wall is still standing and is a well known landmark in Medina Sidonia. The old Parish Church in the small square high above the town provides fabulous views from its bell tower of the surrounding countryside as far as Cadiz and Tarifa. With its cobbled streets and the white washed buildings you are transported back in time to the days when the Moors ruled this area of Spain. The fabulous beach of La Barrosa, one of the most popular on the Costa de la Luz is only a 30 minute drive.
The house is readily accessible by road and is on a level street. There is ample parking outside and the large terrace can also be used.
The nearest shops/bars are 5 minutes walk from the house. The town centre and main shops are 5 minutes by car. There are some fantastic restaurants to enjoy typically Spanish food using ingredients sourced locally. Some of the restaurants and fish restaurants in the pueblo have been established for 50 years and are still popular meeting places for the local families on Sunday afternoon. Small courtyard bars and cafes abound and some bars offer live music at weekends if you fancy letting you hair down. The old town is an intricate web of small alleys and arches and the beautiful Moorish architecture is around every corner. Part of the castle is still standing as are parts the town wall now incorporated into more recent buildings. If you fancy a day out why not go to Bolonia and look around the amazing Roman Town or eat at the fish restaurants on the beach. Take a trek into the Alcornocales Natural Park and see the cork being harvested from the trees. Have a day at the Jerez School of Equestrian Arts and watch the horses training to dance in their world famous exhibitions. Enjoy a tour and sherry sampling at the Sherry Bodegas or stop off at Cadiz and view its fabulous sites or take the ferry to El Puerto de Santa Maria and walk along the river bank and enjoy some of the riverside cafes.A great day out for all ages is the whale safari from Tarifa which takes you out into the Straights of Gibraltar to see the enormous mammals at home in their natural environment. Alternatively hop on the ferry and go to Tangiers for the day to see the sites and invest in some carpets.
